"Alone Again Or" is a song originally recorded in 1967 past the rock group Beloved and written by band fellow member Bryan MacLean. It appears on the album Forever Changes, and was released as a unmarried in the Usa, United kingdom, Australia, French republic and the Netherlands.[2]

Original version [edit]
MacLean originally wrote the song, so called "Alone Once again", in 1965 for Love's debut album. However, he did not complete information technology until the recording of "Forever Changes" in the summertime of 1967. The vocal was inspired by his retentiveness of waiting for a girlfriend, and, according to Barney Hoskyns, the tune drew loosely on Sergei Prokofiev'southward Lieutenant Kije Suite.[iii] The essence of the song is the contrast between the positivity of the tune and the bleakness of the lyrics, with the chorus "And I will exist alone again tonight, my love" finishing with a solitary acoustic guitar, closing the vocal with the opening melody that sounds anything but ecstatic,[four] ending with an E minor plus ii chord.
For the recording session, which took identify on September 10, 1967 at Sunset Audio Recorders in Hollywood, arranger David Angel worked with MacLean, calculation a cord section and a horn function for a mariachi ring whom co-producer Bruce Botnick had recently used on a Tijuana Brass album. MacLean later said, "That was the happiest I e'er was with anything we ever did as a band - the orchestral arrangement of that song".[iii] However, Botnick, with co-producer and band leader Arthur Lee, remixed the track to bring Lee's own unison vocal to the forefront of the song, at least partly on the grounds that MacLean's own vocal pb was also weak.[3] Lee also added to the mystery of the vocal past changing the title to "Lone Again Or".
With Lee at present on co-lead vocals, "Alone Over again Or" became the opening track of Forever Changes. It was the sole unmarried released from the anthology to reach the Billboard singles chart. Its 1968 B-side was Lee's "A House Is Not a Cabin", although the 1970 reissue of the single featured "Good Times" from the 1969 Four Sail album instead.[5] "Alone Again Or", in an edited version in early 1968, initially peaked nationally at No. 123 (and at No. 7 on both Los Angeles station KHJ-AM and San Diego station KGB-AM), while the longer, original anthology version spent 3 weeks on the singles nautical chart in 1970, peaking at No. 99, according to Joel Whitburn'southward Top Popular Singles: 1955–2010.
MacLean'due south limerick (too as the recording itself) has come to exist considered a archetype. In 2004, "Lonely Again Or" came in at No. 436 in the Rolling Stone 500 Greatest Songs of All Time poll.[six] In the mag'south 2010 version, the vocal ranked at No. 442.[7]
The song has been featured in several films, virtually notably the 1996 films Canteen Rocket and Sleepers. It appeared at the close of the 2009 British comedy picture show Bunny and the Bull, playing every bit the lead character finally breaks complimentary of his obsessions. Alone Again Or was also featured in the climactic parade scene catastrophe the last episode of flavour one of the 2019 Netflix series Russian Doll.

"Alone Again Or" was released as a unmarried past the Damned on half dozen April 1987 by MCA. They recorded it as an acknowledgement of Honey beingness one of their influences.
